Castlebar gets first non-Catholic primary school

Mayo County Council announced yesterday that Castlebar Educate Together, Castlebar’s first non-Catholic school, could use a council-owned building to house the new school. Attempts to negotiate a divestment of an existing Catholic school with the Bishop had failed, despite a 2012 survey showing viable demand for an alternative to Catholic schooling.

Educate Together were offered a school building last August by the Parish, however, it was refused as the condition of the building and the distance from the town centre made it an unviable alternative.

The new building offered by the Council is the old Town Council building in Castlebar town.
