Schools instructed to hire graduates over retired teachers

The Minister for Education, Richard Brouton, has instructed managerial bodies of schools to hire unemployed teachers rather than retired teachers. The minister cannot force schools to do so as the hiring of teachers is the school’s responsibility. However, the Department has introduced rules that mean retired teachers returning to work will be paid on a new entrant’s salary and any qualification allowances and certain job role allowances are also not payable, to create a disincentive to return to work post retirement.

Many newly qualified teachers were finding it hard to gain the teaching experience required to pass their teaching qualification when they were competing with teachers with many years experience.
