Leo Varadkar’s parting action as Minister for Social Protection, before he takes up the mantle of Taoiseach, is to raise the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance for primary and secondary school students.
Eligible parents of primary school students will now receive €125 per child, and €250 per secondary school child, which amounts to a 25% increase. Around 108,000 families will benefit from the increase.
Parents who wish to apply for the allowance must apply through the Department of Social Protection. Parents already registered for the scheme will not need to do anything and should receive a letter informing them of the increases.
