The new government has promised to provide 400 new multi-denominational or non-denominational schools by 2030. This comes in the wake of severe criticism by the UN Council on Ireland’s continued breach of Human Rights in the area of pupil access to education.
The Programme for Government states “A road map has been agreed for a phased transfer of Catholic schools to new patrons, where the support of communities exists. We will work with all stakeholders to facilitate this process whilst also considering new approaches such as the potential of different patrons on a single site”.
There is also a commitment to enact new Schools Admission and Excellence legislation, taking into consideration the previous consultations and Admission Bill, which they say will end waiting lists and increase transparency in the enrolment process.
