Primary school pupils must be at least 4 years old before they can enrol in school. Children may enrol at age 4 or 5 but they must be enrolled in a school by age 6. The typical age for starting school is during a child’s 4th year.
Primary schools start with 2 years of infant classes, typically Junior Infants followed by Senior Infants and then classes 1-6.
Parents also have the right to educate their child at home, but this would not be a common option. There are currently 1,090 children home-schooled by their parents in Ireland. If you are interested in home-schooling your child, you can find more information from Home Education Network Ireland.
